Ghost in the Shell Live Action Movie

Ghost in the Shell MovieThe first Ghost in the Shell anime movie really impressed me. I was definitely mesmerized by the strange cyber-punk world of Ghost in the Shell, and fell in love in with the Major, a damn sexy cyborg! Unfortunately the sequel didn't have the strength of the first film, and what could have been a franchise came to a halt.

But there is hope for a revival through a live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. As of 2008, DreamWorks acquired indeed the rights to produce a live-action film adaptation of the original manga with Steven Spielberg. Avi Arad and Steven Paul are confirmed producers. And in October 2009 it was announced that Laeta Kalogridis had been hired to pen a script.

Scriptwriter Laeta Kalogridis has talked about her take on this Ghost in the Shell movie:

"I've got Ghost in the Shell, which is an adaptation of another manga and anime with DreamWorks and Steven's producing that and I'm hoping that the draft will come in pretty soon and I'm hoping he'll like it. DreamWorks had the material and I have loved it for years and years and years. They contacted me about it when they found out that I was interested. I mean, there's just no other property quite like it. It could actually be three two-hour movies, which is what I would vote for, but it's the seminal cyberpunk text as something like Neuromancer. I mean, it really just is, and there's nothing else like it."
Scriptwriter Laeta Kalogridis

I really hope that she can persuade the studios to go for a Ghost in the Shell trilogy!

Here's the movie trailer of the original Ghost in the Shell anime:

"A female cyborg cop and her partner hunt a mysterious and powerful hacker called the Puppet Master."

The live action Ghost in the Shell movie is listed by IMDb for a 2011 release, I can barely wait!
